Larry Bird is widely regarded as one of the three greatest NBA players to ever lace up their sneakers on basketball’s premiere stage alongside Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. He led the Celtics to three NBA championships in the eighties before retiring from the NBA in 1992. In 1996, he was voted to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998.

Bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana and his family experienced much financial difficulty during his early years. The Bird family was also embroiled in personal turmoil, which came to a head when his father, Joe Bird, committed suicide in 1975. Bird admits that being poor motivated a great deal. His humble beginnings also earned him the “The Hick From French Lick.”

The most famous of Bird’s nicknames was “Larry Legend,” which he earned for his exploits on the court and for having a sixth sense about the game. He possessed an uncanny ability to anticipate and react to the action on the floor. He could see the plays before they actually happened. For this reason, his first NBA coach Bill Fitch nicknamed him “Kodak” because he form mental snapshots of every play. This ability allowed him to make passing into an art form. He could often spot open teammates even before they knew they were open. This gift also allowed him to snag critical rebounds and make key steals even though he was not extraordinarily big or quick.

Bird finished his high school career as the all-time scoring leader of Springs Valley High school. He accepted a scholarship of Indiana University in 1976, but left after a month. He later enrolled at Indiana State University and led the Sycamores to a 33-1 record and to the national championship game in 1979 where his team lost to the Michigan State University, led by Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who would become Bird’s chief rival in the NBA for over a decade. Off the court, the two were close friends and together, they rejuvenated first the college game and later the NBA.

Though Bird’s team lost to Johnson in the college championship, Bird would edge out his nemesis in terms of individual honors as he was regarded as the best college basketball player at the time, winning both the Naismith and Wooden Awards.

Once Bird and Johnson entered the NBA with the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers, respectively, they became the league’s biggest stars. Together, they won eight NBA championships in a 10 year span, with Bird bagging three titles and Johnson capturing five.

Larry Johnson has been suspended for the Nov 8 game by the team for posting undignified comments on Sunday night on his twitter account towards his head coach Todd Haley. Kansas City Chiefs running back, Johnson posted a gay slur in his comments and the team conducted an investigation before suspending him for the next game, at Jacksonville, on November 8. Johnson has been disallowed to participate in team activities until November 9.Chiefs are at 1-6 in the current season and the team is on its bye week until November 8.

Johnson had posted the remarks on twitter after losing the Sunday game to San Diego Chargers and he posted a second remark on Monday as well. On Tuesday, Johnson issued an apology for his remarks. But he already lost a huge amount by issuing the comments on twitter. He lost a total amount of $600,000 which includes one game check and other revenues.

Agent Peter Schaffer said he consulted the Players Association and will file an appeal tomorrow, on behalf of Larry. Schaffer hopes to get a mutual resolution with the Chiefs. Johnson had signed a contract extension with Chiefs in 2007 which guaranteed him $19 million but the penalty may cloud his association with the team. Schaffer said he agreed to the actions taken against the player to discipline him but the punishment should be supported by facts and it should be allowable as per the agreement. He expects to get a mutual agreement.

He used the slur during an exchange with one of his Twitter followers. A day later, he used it again as he brushed off reporters and told them he would not comment, according to the Kansas City Star, which recorded the comment.

Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is a Spider-Man video game with an original perspective. That is because players will see Spider-Man becoming allies with his most malicious foes. Some of these adversaries entail Green Goblin, Dr. Otto Octavius, Venom, and Sandman. The location of the game is not exclusively set in New York city; the lovable hero will travel to different areas of Asia as well. There will also be a multiplayer component to the single player campaign. The plot in Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is utterly ludicrous, but that is alright. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is about a meter crashing down on earth with deadly repercussions. It is a breath of fresh air to view an innovative Spider-Man storyline. Many gamers are worn out of the same unoriginal plot with the Spider-Man video games time and time again. If Spider-Man fans were able to get pass the eccentric story in Marvel Ultimate Alliance, then they will easily overcome the story in Spider-Man: Friend or Foe. The gameplay has all the bells and whistles that Spider-Man nerds (like myself) will enjoy. There is your traditional web-slinging and swift Spider-Man maneuvers that will make gamers giddy. Conversely, there are some rudimentary puzzle solving aspects in the game. Since Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is catered for the 10 – 14 age demographic, you will not be expected to accomplish a plethora of intricate puzzles. However, a few puzzles sprinkled in here and there are present to alter the pace. In addition, you will be able to swap to a different character (ala Resident Evil 0) on the fly. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is expected to come out on the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, PC, and PlayStation 2. Activision has not corroborated if a PlayStation 3 version is under development. Not having a PlayStation 3 version of Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is illogical because Spider-Man and Sony are synonymous. Hopefully, a PlayStation 3 iteration will be announced shortly. Spider-Man: Friend or Foe is slated for an October 2, 2007 release date.

Anderson Silva (23-4) Vs. Thales Leites (14-1)

   If you look back to Anderson’s previous fights the one word that comes to mind is destruction. However, the only fight that Anderson ever had trouble in was against Travis Lutter. If you remember Travis Lutter was a brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt, got Silva to the mat and had him mounted raining down punches. You can’t guarantee many things in the MMA world but one thing you can guarantee is that if Leites can do that to Silva then we will have a new Middleweight champion. He is just to good on the ground. With all that being said……

Chuck Liddell (21-6) Vs Shogun Rua (17-3)

            This fight has had me stumped since it was announced. On one hand you have The Iceman who is coming off one of the most brutal knockout losses in MMA history. He was the most dominant light-heavy we have seen in this generation, the first UFC star and a fan-favorite. The questions have been following him since his knockout loss to Rampage at UFC 71 and his knockout at UFC 88 hasn’t helped. Look I can sit here and go on and on but the fact of the matter is Chuck is a stubborn man. He has flaws as does every other fighter and it took his loss to Rashad to go get them addressed. He has been working with Howard Davis of American Top Team. which could lead us to the old Iceman, the counter-punching nightmare that saw him destroy opponents. Shogun on the other hand was widely considered the best 205 pounder on the planet a few years ago. That was until soccer kicks and stomps were disallowed and a knee injury against Forrest Griffin  attributed to a very poor performance to say the least in his first UFC bout. However his performance against Mark Coleman was dismal and pathetic. Shogun is so gifted and so talented that I wouldn’t be surprised if the Iceman was was the one who brought out the best in Shogun. If he is fully healed and fully healthy I think Shogun beats Chuck. If he is not then it’s the Iceman. What do I think?

Krzysztof Soszynski (17-9) Vs. Brian Stann (6-1)

            This fight promises to be a standup war. Stann made a name for himself with his fights against Steve Cantwell and I think he will follow the same blueprint. Soszynski will be forced to oblige and Stann will win by TKO.

 

Cheick Kongo (23-4-1) Vs. Antoni Hardonk (8-4)

            The hottest heavyweight on the planet right now is buying time with this fight against Hardonk. If he wins this I have to believe he will get his title shot or at least a #1 contender match with Shane Carwin. Kongo is that good. His standup is right up there with the best in the division and on the feet he will knock anyone out. His weakness is on the mat where he has been exposed in the past. I just don’t think hardonk can get him there before he gets knocked out. Kongo will be patient and will knock him out early in the second round.

 

Steve Cantwell (7-1) Vs. Luis Cane (10-1)

 I am a big fan of Luis Cane. He looked very good against Sokoudjou and I think Cantwell’s best bet is to try and take him down. I think if he keeps it on the feet he will good down early. I think Cane is a second Tier light heavy and Cantwell is not.

MMA athletes are unlike any other. Some sports force you into focusing on strength and size, while others emphasize endurance, power, and quickness. Of course, the typical MMA athlete would laugh at this because it’s the only sport where you have to have all characteristics simply in order to compete. Throw in the ability to think quickly while your head is buzzing from that left hook you didn’t see coming, or the choke-induced absence of blood to your brain, and you’ve got an impressive diverse athlete.

Nitric Oxide

Nitric Oxide is a free form gas that is produced in the body and is used by the body to communicate with other cells in the body. To produce this gas, enzymes in the body break down the amino acid Arginine.

Nitric Oxide is a molecule consisting of one atom of nitrogen and one atom of oxygen. The production of Nitric Oxide occurs when the amino acid L-arginine is converted into L-citruline through an enzyme group known as Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS). The fact that nitric oxide increases blood flow should make it of interest to MMA fighters, as increased blood flow will serve to deliver more nutrients to muscles, thus helping muscles become larger when subject to stress.* Nitric oxide also affects the endocrine system. It affects the release of gonadotroptin releasing hormone, as well as the release of adrenaline from the adrenal medulla. Adrenaline is vital in combat situation; in the cage or in the street.

Glutamine

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid (building block of protein) in the bloodstream. It is considered a “conditionally essential amino acid” because it can be manufactured in the body, but under extreme physical stress the demand for glutamine exceeds the body’s ability to make it. Most glutamine in the body is stored in muscles followed by the lungs, where much of the glutamine is manufactured. Glutamine is important for removing excess ammonia (a common waste product in the body). In the process of picking up ammonia, glutamine donates it when needed to make other amino acids, as well as sugar, and the antioxidant glutathione.

MMA athletes who train excessively may deplete their glutamine stores. This is because they are overusing their skeletal muscles, where much of the glutamine in the body is stored. Athletes who overstress their muscles (without adequate time for recovery between workouts) may have lowered immunity and may be at increased risk for infection or slow recovery from injuries. This is also true for people who participate in prolonged exercise, such as ultra-marathon runners (or a five round fight). For this select group of athletes, glutamine supplementation may be useful. This is not true, however, for most exercisers who tend to work out at a much more moderate intensity.

Thermogenics

The most common form of energy supplements is a class of supplements called thermogenics, also known as stimulants. Thermogenics are substances that cause the body to increase its metabolic rate. This causes the body to start burning more calories, resulting in an increase in energy. The most common thermogenics are caffeine and Synephrine (bitter orange).

MMA thermogenic supplements with ingredients that provide very diverse actions ranging from thyroid gland support to aiding in mental focus and motivation.  These products stimulate fat loss in general, but also combats fat specifically in stubborn areas for localized fat loss.  Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants aid by increasing the metabolic rate and also provide the body with energy, increasing  training intervals and intensity. Note: The human body can build up a resistance to stimulants, so only use these products in cycles or only when needed for a boost in energy levels or during weight cutting phases.

Did Chris Brown really beat Rihanna? That’s what news sources are indicated that happened on the night of the Grammy Awards. Chris Brown was immidiately arrested when Rihanna had called police directly after the incident.  He was taken by the Los Angeles Police Department and is now under investigation for attacking and beating Rihanna.

Sources say that Chris Brown is a long time girl friend of the superstar singer and they had to cancel their live performance because of the incident at the Grammy’s just the other night.

Quinton Jackson (Win) Decision over Keith Jardine

In the “Fight Of The Night” Rampage got his win on Saturday but not in stylish fashion. Rampage did not look like the regular Rampage we know. Quinton did admit to overtraining for this fight and signs showed as tired in the later parts of each round. Rampage did take advantage of Jardine’s cautiousness being the aggressor the entire fight. Jardine did a nice job dodging and moving around to avoid the big knockout but was not aggressive enough on offensive to score himself any points. Rampage now gets his title shot against Evans for the Light Heavy Weight Title.

Shane Carwin (Win) KO Gabriel Gonzaga

This was the big upset of the night. We all heard that Carwin had power but wow. It looked like Gonzaga was putting himself on cruise control when he took down Carwin and it would be a easy victory from there. After the ref stood them up Carwin connected perfectly with a short right hand that sent Gonzaga into another world. Carwin moves to a perfect MMA record of11-0.

Matt Brown (Win) KO Pete Sell

This fight was very hard to watch. Yes this is the UFC but no one wants to see someone get hurt. I think everyone was thinking the same thing screaming to stop the fight. Dana White really needs to get referee’s that know what they’re doing because Sell could have gotten seriously injured. I give credit to Brown who threw a terrific head kick which landed flush totally threw Sell totally off guard. Sell was clearly hurt from that first shot. Sell showed his big heart as usual and took the punishment for the next two minutes. The referee finally listened to Dana White screaming from his seat, 20,000 Columbus fans and Matt Brown finally calling it.

Matt Hamill (Win) KO Mark Munoz

Matt Hamill was by far the most energetic fighter of the night. This guy was just ready to go and take care of business on Saturday and he did just that. The hometown hero had a big advantage when every fan was screaming his name as he entered the Octagon. Hamill looked terrific in the first part of the fight landing varies of punches and kicks. Hamill then secured himself the “Knockout Of The Night” purse as he perfectly timed a right leg kick. The kick connected perfectly with the left side of Munoz head knocking him out instantly. Hamill easily won knockout of the night put himself in the running for best knockout in UFC history

Gray Maynard (Win) Unanimous Decision Jim Miller

Watch out for this guy Maynard. Every time he fights he just keeps getting better and better. Soon enough he will get his title shot at 155 and he is no push over. Maynard absolutely destroyed Miller beating him around the whole cage. Maynard showcased his great stand up abilities as well as his wrestling back round as he secured himself another win by unanimous decision. Gray is now a perfect 7-0 in the UFC

Overall UFC 96 was very impressive. Without a title fight on the card many people thought this card was going to be boring. It was just the opposite. With two upsets and four out of five fights coming by knockout what more could you ask for. Giving Dana White credit is like kissing your sister but the man did put together a great card which lead to a great night.
